how i love her, backlit against the door

i know there’s no excuse for me

i need her absolutely

it’s what i can’t control

and she is so beautiful to me

but look at her now

she’s got such a pretty face…

i remember how she’d cry to me for more

something i’ll never hear again

and some nights i imagine

she’ll call some other name

someone whose love for her remains under control

she’s got such a pretty face…

housing commission home

and a long-term government home loan

work goes off and on

and the teenage honeymoon is long gone

i could never win it for you

now i’m gonna lose alone

because you’re taking one last look at me

in all the years, the last you’ll see

and now to show i love her

i can not reach the words

and in the silence i’m afraid

i’ll hit her again

she’s got such a pretty face…

such a broken face

It’s a song about domestic violence o-o

He may not be as famous as Jimmy Barnes or as gorgeous as Ian Moss but Don was definitely a genius and a very good person.

When you think about it, Don Walker is one of the reasons that Cold Chisel ever happened. He was one of the founders of the band and he wrote most of their songs. He wrote most of their more greater songs. He was the man who wrote Khe Sanh and that’s their most famous song.

He was also a really talented musician. Like when you watch him play the organ or piano or whatever form of keys he’s playing, the music just flows out of the instrument. He plays with a lot of passion, from when he’s rapidly pressing down on the keys with such pace that it’s almost ridiculous to when he’s simply playing chords… It always seems to add to the effect of the music.

The lyrics he wrote though… They always showed depth. He wrote about so many topics many people probably wouldn’t even consider worth writing songs about; from abortion to domestic violence to riots at hotels and the vietnam war. His lyrics told real stories and shared his point of view and when you listen to them you know that he would be a very intelligent man. Maybe not “sophisticated” and maybe he didn’t make things seem pretty but his lyrics were raw and they didn’t need to be altered. His words were what they were and that’s why he was such a great writer.

I find it amazing how he isn’t overly arrogant as a person. With some of the things he accomplished, he’d have every right to be somewhat egotistic. But he isn’t. He seems very calm and controlled. It’s hard to not respect him as a person and as a musician.
